Qantas Announces Nonstop Sydney-London Flight for 2027

Qantas Airways has announced plans to launch the world's longest nonstop commercial flight in October 2027. Connecting Sydney and London directly, the route will span over 16,000 kilometers (nearly 10,000 miles) with an estimated flight duration of up to 22 hours. This nonstop service is expected to trim up to four hours off current one-stop routes.
Project Sunrise and the Modified A350 Fleet
The direct connection represents the centerpiece of Project Sunrise, Qantas' ultra-long-haul initiative first introduced in 2017. To operate these marathon flights, the Australian airline has ordered 12 specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft.
The first of these planes was recently unveiled at Airbus' headquarters in Toulouse, France. The ultra-long-range variant features a custom engineering layout, including a 20,000-liter auxiliary fuel tank to handle the trans-hemispheric distance.
Cabin Design and Passenger Demand
The fleet is designed to prioritize comfort during the 22-hour journey, carrying a total of 238 passengers across four distinct cabin classes. Qantas cited internal customer studies indicating strong appetite for direct transits. According to their research, 70% of surveyed Australian travelers would choose a nonstop flight for this route, with interest jumping to 80% among premium-class flyers.
Redemptions & Mileage Options
For reward travelers, this launch creates a major new redemption target. Points and miles collectors can book seats on these flights using Qantas Frequent Flyer points. Indian card users can access Qantas reward seats by transferring points from partner programs like American Express Membership Rewards or Citibank PremierMiles. Planning these high-demand redemptions well in advance will be crucial once booking windows open.
